Congregation Beth Elohim seeks an intern to help organize and digitize our Congregation’s library. The library contains approximately 5000 books, mostly on the subjects of Jewish history, literature, and religious texts. The intern will be responsible for organizing and
maintaining the order of the library, and converting our current card
system into a digital log of titles. The intern will also be
responsible for assessing books for possible damage and, pending
funding approval, preparing the library for renovation. This is a
part-time internship, and interns will be expected to work at least 10
hours a week, though we can be flexible on the weekly schedule. This
is a largely unsupervised project, so applicants must be responsible,
dilligent, and trustworthy. Students who wish to receive credit for
this internship must make arrangements through their school.

All interested students should send a cover letter and resume to Alix
Fellman at afellman <at> cbebk.org.

Congregation Beth Elohim is a Reform synagogue in Park Slope,
Brooklyn. Since 1861, the Congregation has offered educational,
religious, social, and cultural services to its members and the
surrounding community.

The University of Chicago Library is accepting applications for the 2008 Mary and Samuel Somit Preservation Internship. This Internship, established in 2006, has been made possible through the generosity of Dr. Albert Somit (AB ‘41, PhD ‘47), University of Chicago alumnus and past president of Southern Illinois University. Dr. Somit has
established the Internship to honor his parents’ legacy, serve the needs
of the Library’s collection, and prepare individuals for important work
to preserve library materials and other scholarly works so that they are
available for research and teaching in the future.

The Internship is intended to provide firsthand experience and a broader
understanding of the care and treatment of library and archives
materials in an academic library. Under the direction of the
Preservation Librarian, the Intern will learn about the organization and
operations of a comprehensive preservation program and preservation
issues and challenges within the context of a large research library.
The Intern will have the opportunity to work with staff and carry out a
project under the guidance of the Head of Conservation, the Preservation
Reformatting Librarian, or the Preservation Manager in the Special
Collections Research Center (SCRC). The selection of a project and the
completion of a final report will be based on the interests and skills
of the Intern and the needs of the Preservation Department and the SCRC.

Representative projects include:

Gathering background documentation and synthesizing information on a
selected preservation issues or topics. Through this work, the Intern
will become familiar with an aspect of the preservation literature.

Designing and implementing a pilot project that documents the variables
and tests the workflow for a preservation production operation. This
will be an opportunity to apply, test, and fine-tune hypothetical
concepts in a daily working environment.

Developing, performing, and documenting a condition assessment or survey
for a print or media collection. This information will be used to
prioritize, plan, and implement general or specific treatment programs.

Eligibility and requirements:

Graduates and currently enrolled students of a recognized library or
conservation program; or students (graduate or undergraduate) with
equivalent experience and training in preservation, book conservation,
or digital reformatting. Applicants must be familiar with preservation
principles, conservation treatments, and reformatting activities and
possess the ability to work collaboratively and independently to
accomplish project goals. Familiarity with Windows XP, PC network
environment, word-processing and spreadsheet software is important.

Applicants must commit to six consecutive weeks of full-time work or a
part-time schedule over a specified time period that is mutually
agreeable. The 2008 Internship provides a $3,000 stipend.

Students who are interested in the Internship should submit a letter of
application expressing their interest in this opportunity as well as a
resume and the names and e-mail addresses of three references.
Applications received by December 15, 2007, will be assured
consideration. The Internship is available after June 1, 2008. The
actual appointment date will be based on discussions with the
Preservation Librarian and the successful applicant.

The University of Chicago Library is an equal opportunity/affirmative
action employer.

The department is seeking a graduate student for the upcoming Spring 2008 semester to coordinate this effort. The position involves digitizing images and slides in Adobe Photoshop and cataloging them using LUNA software and guidelines established by the department in cooperation with the library’s visual resource staff. Though training will be offered for all software used, some degree of experience in scanning and/or cataloging is desirable but not required. Likewise a general knowledge of art is helpful but not necessary. Good verbal communication skills are essential as the job relies on interaction with other students and faculty. The student will be working at the Brooklyn Campus for approximately 10 hours a week. The position is a graduate assistantship and pays the standard institutional amount of approximately 12 dollars an hour. It offers students in either the SILS or Art History programs a chance to gain skills applicable to the rapidly expanding field of providing digital, visual information.

Catalyst is seeking an MLIS student for an unpaid internship (plus transportation and lunch reimbursement) in its Information Center (IC). The IC librarians respond daily to the requests of Catalyst members, academic and nonprofit organizations, professional associations, researchers, writers, and the media.Because the IC provides such a variety of services to its users, interns will have the opportunity to work on various aspects of librarianship, including the following:

· Projects regarding gender diversity in business

· Cataloging articles and reports using modified MARC formatting for the IC catalog

· Developing new/updating existing Quick Takes, a series of statistics-based overviews of topics such as women in the labor force, women of color, work/life balance, working mothers, women in Canada, etc. (View the Quick Takes here: http://www.catalyst.org/bookstore/freematerials.shtml)

· Assisting the librarians to answer reference questions as needed

The length of the internship and weekly work schedule are flexible, and interns may work from home for certain tasks of the internship. Interns are required to have a basic understanding of library functions and have taken at least one class in cataloging and reference. Interns must be motivated, possess initiative, be technologically savvy, and be able to work independently. Though welcome, previous library work experience is not required and on-the-job training will be provided as part of the internship.

If you are interested, please send a resume and cover letter to Cheryl Yanek, Associate Librarian at the Information Center, at cyanek <at> catalyst.org. In the cover letter, please address the following topics: (1) Why you want to work for Catalyst; (2) What you would like to work on/what you expect from the internship, and (3) Offer a proposed work schedule.

About Catalyst
