METRO Issues Forum: What Does the Millennial Generation Want from Libraries
and from Colleges and Universities?
Date/Time: Tuesday, November 6, 2007 – 10:00am to 1:00pm
Location: METRO, 57 E. 11 Street, New York, NY 10003
Registration Fee: $75 members; $100 non-members
Presented by Richard Sweeney, University Librarian at the New Jersey
Institute of Technology (NJIT), with a panel of Millennial students from
the New York area.
Description: They already know that they don’t want to work or play like
their parents’ generation. They are called the Millennials, Gen Y, Next
Gen, Echo Boomers, or…”Don’t Label Us.” They use information, and
learn, differently. They are impatient, better educated, digital natives
who read less literature and newspapers, want more selectivity in their
products and services, expect to earn more than their parents, play
electronic games, prefer learning experientially, typically instant and
text message more than they email, and already know that they don’t want
to work and live like their parents. They were born between 1979 and
1994, and they are the largest generation since the Baby Boomers (1946
to 1964). Richard Sweeney will present the research about the
Millennials and then pose questions to a live panel of about 12
Millennials, as he attempts to confirm and expand on the research.
Audience participants will be given an opportunity to ask their own
questions of the panel. What do Millennials want in a library or a
college / university? What are the ideal Millennial learning
environments? Come and find out.
