POSITION TITLE: Library Assistant
DEPARTMENT: The Costume Institute and Watson Library
REPORTS TO: Associate Museum Librarian
EFFECTIVE DATE: September 2007
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Library Assistant will be responsible for book processing and
labeling library materials, and preparing binding shipments in the
Costume Institute Library and the Watson Library. Other duties at the
Costume Institute Library include shelving books and working on special
projects, maintaining a high volume of photocopying of fashion
magazines, and providing research assistance to the Museum staff and
outside researchers.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
* Processes and labels books and other library materials. Monitors
supplies of barcodes, labels and archival materials
* Prepares periodicals and books for shipment to the commercial bindery
using BIS binding software
* Performs stacks maintenance
* Creates and updates item records
* Works on special projects (library inventories, stacks shifting, etc.)
and assists with writing documentation
* Provides research assistance and support to Museum staff, designers,
scholars, and students
* Other related duties
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Skills:
* Some library experience preferred, especially in technical services
* Must be detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task
* Ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing environment
required
* Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal, and client
service skills
Knowledge and Education:
* B.A. required
* Knowledge of one European language
* Knowledge of PCs and Windows and ability to work in a networked
environment
