The University Library at Appalachian State University invites applications from innovative and proactive individuals to join a library seeking excellence. This newly created position of Reference Archivist/Librarian
will provide instructional, reference, and research services for the Library’s holdings of rare books, manuscripts, and archival records which are part of the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection, the University Archives, the Stock Car Racing Collection, the diverse Rare Books and Manuscript Collections.
Responsibilities:
* Teaches students the value and use of Special Collections primary
resources through instructional presentations, one-on-one research
assistance sessions, and development of assignments.
* Designs web-based instructional materials about the collections
which will be made available through the Library’s web page and through
faculty’s course management sites.
* Instructs and guides students, faculty, and other researchers in
identifying and using materials appropriate to their needs.
* Fosters the Library’s commitment to students both inside and
outside the classroom.
* Manages the D.D. Dougherty Reading Room and serves as contact for
use of the Collections. Develops policies and procedures for the use,
preservation, and security of rare books, manuscripts, and archival records.
* Serves as the contact person for use of rare books, manuscripts,
and archival records, and schedules research visits.
* Promotes the use of Special Collections materials by giving
presentations to groups such as high school students, alumni, community
members, and visiting scholars. Publicizes Special Collections through
local, state, and national media.
* Develops tools to measure and assess researcher satisfaction and
outcomes, with special consideration toward enhancing virtual/online tools
and services.
* Participates in an active program of scholarship and professional
service as outlined in the University’s Faculty Handbook and the Library’s
DPC Guidelines and participates in writing grant applications.
* Supports the research of other faculty, students, and scholars by
providing reference and research services for primary sources and
publicizing new materials and their research value.
Qualifications Required:
a.. A masters degree in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited
institution; or a masters degree in Archival Science; or a masters degree in
History or Public History with a concentration in archival administration;
or special competencies in lieu of these degrees.
b.. Demonstrated scholarly potential and evidence of instructional
abilities.
c.. Demonstrated ability to both take leadership roles and collaborate
with a wide variety of people.
d.. Enthusiasm for working in a team environment and working closely with
faculty and students.
e.. Commitment to engaging in an active program of scholarship and
professional service.
f.. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred:
a.. Experience in providing reference and instruction services in a
special collection.
b.. Experience in designing and maintaining web pages.
c.. Commitment to achieving diversity within a university community.
d.. Life experiences similar to those of underrepresented populations at
Appalachian. The Library strongly encourages applications from members of

This twelve-month tenure track position will be available in the Fall of
2007. The position may be filled at the Instructor, Assistant Professor, or
Associate Professor ranks. Rank as an Assistant or Associate Professor and
continued employment beyond the Instructor term requires an advanced degree
in addition to the MLS. Salary and rank are determined on the basis of
qualifications and experience. Minimum salaries for the ranks are:
Instructor $39,000, Assistant Professor $42,000, and Associate Professor
$45,000.

Opened in 2005, the Carol G. Belk Library and Information Commons contains
165,000 sq. ft., holds 850,000 volumes, and provides access to over 110,000
electronic titles and subscriptions. The Library includes seventy-five
permanent employees and is organized in a team structure. Special
Collections consists of the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection, the Stock Car
Racing Collection, University Archives & Records, and expanding rare book
and manuscript collections. The Special Collections team currently consists
of five faculty members, three staff, and twenty-five part-time student
employees.
Appalachian State University is a member institution of the sixteen-campus
