Spend your summer in Maine, working here:
Montpelier, the General Henry Knox Museum, an historic house museum in midcoast Maine, houses an important collection of Federal Period furniture and decorative arts, as well as primary and secondary resources related to the economic development and settling of midcoast Maine. Two different paid internships are available:
Curatorial Intern: This internship is designed to offer a broad range of experience in museum operations including research, collections management, interpretation and program development.
Educational Intern: This internship is part of the museum’s Center for the Study of Early American History, and will provide a focused experience in museum educational programming.
Interns will have dedicated time to organize and implement a major project, designed in consultation with the museum’s Director of Education, to whom they will report. The purpose of the projects will be to support the development of the museum’s long range plans for the restoration of the building, the development of the grounds and the expansion of its educational programs. Each project will be expected to have a public component. Specific interests and possible projects will be discussed during the interview process, but the museum is especially interested in historic gardens this season.
Undergraduate or graduate students with a background or strong interest in history, historic preservation, education, library and archival science or museum studies are encouraged to apply. A high level of self-motivation and initiative is required. Internships are 3⁄4 time for 11 weeks and pay $2,500 depending on experience. Saturdays and some special evening and weekend events are required. Starting and ending dates are flexible.
To apply, please send a letter describing your interest and experience with museums or nonprofits, a resume and three references to Ellen Dyer, General Henry Knox Museum, PO Box 326, Thomaston, ME 04861 or by email to center <at> knoxmuseum.org. Please indicate which internship you are interested in. Application deadline is Monday, March 26, 2007.

I used to live in this part of Maine. It’s really beautiful and very near the coast. The cost of living is low, too, but you’d need a car. (You could probably buy a cheap used one and sell it again if you don’t want to keep it.)
Fresh air and fresh seafood — YEAH!
